Old habits in fact DO NOT die hard
That’s why the phrase ‘it’s like riding a bike’ rings so true. We just pick up from where we left off and carry on doing the same as we’d done before…
It’s also why Alcoholics Anonymous is recognised as one of the most successful change management programmes of all time.

BLOG 4 – Kick start habit change in your business - make it personal...
Which daily business habits do you have? Driving to work the same way? Parking in the same spot? Having a cup of coffee as soon as you get to work? Checking your emails as soon as they arrive? Having the same meeting at the same time every day?
These are probably, until now actions that you had not recognised as habits, but you can see that you do them habitually.
Research tells us that without even realising it, most of what we do every day is habitual – we do the same things in the same order at roughly the same time – EVERY DAY.
If you want to changing the fortunes of your business it’s essential to recognise these habits and to change them…
Let’s change tack for a minute…
To make real habit change work in your business you first need to change a personal habit.
Practice on a personal habit change first as with each habit change we get better at changing habits.
There are only 5 signs, 5 triggers, 5 cues you must be aware of to get the habit change and the results you want.
When you recognise these 5 triggers you can control your actions and change your habits and improve your results.
For example – change the way you brush your teeth…
All 5 triggers are at play:
1. Same location – your bathroom
2. Same time – first thing in the morning
3. Same people – just you
4. Same preceding action – putting the toothpaste on the brush
5. Same emotional state – tired – just got up
Change a trigger and see what happens…
Put the toothpaste on in a different location, change the direction you brush your teeth, brush them with someone else, brush them for a minute longer…
Then translate this to a business habit – again keep it simple to start with – remember with each habit change we get better at changing habits.
Start by making ‘planning your day’ a habit - even if you freewheel from job to job – this is a good habit you can develop.
The most productive people have a plan for each day, a list or diary time scheduled for everything they plan to do that day.
Less productive people rush from job to job, moving from the phone, to emails and then other urgent matters…
Which one are you?
Put the 5 triggers to work in your business today… Click here (URL to your webpage BBS) to read how
BLOG 5 - Are you using the 5 triggers to promote real and effective habit change in your business?
Because we are so entrenched and attached to our daily routines both in our personal and professional lives it can be hard to put real habit change into effect.
It’s easy to make a temporary change but then over time slip back to the same old routine.
But the truth is your business will not grow or succeed if you don’t identify the habits preventing your business from reaching its maximum productivity.
Start simple – remember changing habits long term is not easy, in fact its hard.
Habit change by definition is a long change, some research suggests in can take between 66 and 260 days to install a new habit over an old one successfully.
To make it easier, focus on one habit at a time and use the 5 habit triggers.
These are 5 primary ways that a new habit can be triggered. If you understand each of them, then you can select the right one for the habit you are trying to change.
For example, a UK recruitment company developed a ’10 before 10’ habit – 10 sales calls before 10am and everyone stands up for this.
The 5 triggers are being managed:
1. Location – they change the look of the location as everyone is standing up
2. Time – they are managing the time as everyone must do their calls before 10am
3. People – everyone will have to be there as it must be done before 10am, so this gets people into work and committed early in the day
4. Preceding action – everyone will be starting work earlier – preparing for the calls
5. Emotional state – people are more focused, ready to start the day with a sales habit
Can you and your team agree on one work habit which you would all like to change, like this recruitment company did?
Can you get your team focused on the habitual change and get them on your side?
Click here (URL to your webpage BBS) to learn how to use the 5 triggers in your business today to drive through the habitual change needed.
BLOG 6 – 5 tips for real habit change in your business…
Changing habits is not easy and requires repeated experiments and failures over time.
Let’s look at how you and your team manage the emails they receive in a working day.
If your team are used to answering emails as soon as the emails arrive in their inbox then changing this to designated time slots throughout the day will be hard.
BUT… they will find the work they do in between will be more beneficial (the reward) as they are not being constantly interrupted.
They will also realise that most emails in fact can wait…
Here are 5 helping hands to help you successfully implement this habit change:
1. Choose a new habit – choose just one to start your journey. For example your team schedule time in the diary for responding to emails
2. Identify the old habit you want to replace with the new habit - Do you and your team check your emails or your phone too much? What do you want to change?
3. Identify the reward you get from your old routine.
You know you are on top of your emails when you are checking them all the time and not missing anything, this is rewarding…
but checking them all the time is not productive, look for new rewards in the new habit – ie the time between scheduled email checking will be more focused and productive… this helps you manage the change and the reward is still there.
4. Identify the cue for your existing routine.
Ask yourself questions to identify the cues for your existing habit – realising the cue will allow you to know what to change – for example – turn off your email notifications if they make a sound – that way you are not aware that the email has arrived and are therefore not tempted to break from the new routine and look at them.
5. Have a plan for your new habit – kick start your new habit with a plan, have the diary time to look at your emails planned – make sure you stick to it – don’t schedule meetings or other appointments over it – this will mean you are then back to looking at your emails in non-diary time…
And finally – good luck

BLOG 7 - What happens to the success of your business when you change your routine behaviour?
What is stopping you from changing a bad business habit into a good business habit today?
Research shows that when most people try to change a habit they make the effort to change for a while but sooner or later go back to previous routine.
Real and effective habit change is not easy, its requires discipline and hard work.
The thing is it can’t be easy, it needs to be hard!
Remember it’s as hard for your competition as it is for you.
Habit change by definition is a long change. Some research suggests it takes between 66 and 260 days to install a new habit over an old one successfully.
It is also important to remember that it is so easy to drift back to doing what you did before, whenever you turn up at work as usual, all the usual triggers/cues will prompt your usual routine and the same results too…
In his book The Power of Habit Change Charles Duhigg states
“A habit is a formula our brain automatically follows: when I see a CUE, I will perform a ROUTINE in order to get a REWARD. To re-engineer that formula, we need to begin making choices again”
He believes successful change can be better achieved when you put the habit wheel (see below) to work for you and your business.
If you manage your cues, you will be able to change your routine behaviour.
In time you can master the habit change you seek by recognising the three components of your habit loop and using your new-found awareness to stimulate your habit change.
BE WARNED: Old habits don’t die! They are waiting in the shadows happy to trip you up unless you stay vigilant, stay conscious, stay aware.
