Blog 1 – Business benefits when you lead with a clear purpose
Running your business, especially now, is challenging.
You and your team are working very hard just to survive these uncertain times, on making sure that your business remains profitable and has a future.
It goes without saying that your business cannot exist without making money - but is the money solely the reason for its existence?
If the purpose of your business is just to make money, then you may need to rethink…
Think about these professions and their purpose:
- Doctors – is their purpose to make money – no, it’s to heal people
- Teachers – is their purpose to make money – no, it’s to educate
- Mechanics – is their purpose to make money – no, it’s to repair, or rebuild
Yes, they all make money, but it’s not the purpose of their professions, the purpose of their profession transcends making money.
So, what is the purpose of your business, of your profession, of you as the business leader and of your team?
And have you ever taken the time to work out what your business stands for?
What difference does your business make to everyone involved – your customers, your team, your suppliers, your investors?
Successful business is not just about delivering your products and services to your customers for a profit, it’s about having a deeper meaning that connects with your customers, your employees, your stakeholders and it’s about consistently leading your business with this deeper meaning in mind.

Blog 2 – Leading with purpose brings clarity and alignment to your business
As a business manager or business leader you lead your business every day, every week, every month.
What would you say when asked about the purpose of your business?
You might say:
- To ensure the team are happy
- To deliver to our customers on time
- To deal with customer complaints efficiently
- To have a quick turnaround of orders
- To make a profit
All these things are important for your business to function healthily. These are the things you are doing within your business every day and are the aims and ambitions of you and your team, but they are not the purpose of your business.
Capturing a clear description of your business’s purpose is not easy, but it is a source of sustainable competitive advantage when you make it happen, so worth the effort.
So, what exactly do we mean by purpose?
Roy M Spence gives us a clear definition:
Simply put. It’s a definitive statement about the difference you are trying to make. If you have a purpose and can articulate it with clarity and passion, everything makes sense, everything flows. ‘It’s Not What You Sell, It’s What You Stand For’
So, what does it take to lead with purpose?
Your core purpose is your business’s fundamental reason for being, and like a compass, gives you and your business a sense of direction for all your decisions and actions in keeping with what matters most to you. By staying true to this you will ensure you are leading your business with purpose.

Blog 3 - Weather the storm and lead your business with purpose like Whole Foods Market
What is the purpose of your business?
This question takes thought, planning and a real understanding of what your business stands for.
It is not a list of the ‘things that you do in your business’. It’s about the values of your business, a deeper meaning that connects and binds everyone involved in your business together and it’s about something that is rooted deep in the culture on your business, intrinsic to all the actions taken and decisions made – something that you and your team live and believe in every day!
Here’s a great story of Whole Foods Market who led their business with purpose and survived and prospered because of it.
Whole Foods Market had been in business for just 8 months when their store was hit by a storm. Torrential rain meant the store was under 8 feet of water, all their equipment and food stocks were destroyed - £300,000 worth. With no savings or insurance, they were financially wiped out.
For the founders John Mackey and Renee Lawson, it felt like a short-lived dream was ending in a nightmare. But as the day unfolded customers and neighbours started showing up with mops and buckets, when asked why, their response was:
“Whole Foods is really important to me”
“I’m not sure I’d want to live here if it wasn’t for Whole Foods”
And it wasn’t just the customers who helped Whole Foods get back on their feet. Team members worked for free, suppliers offered to resupply with extended credit and investors helped with refinancing.
28 days after the storm, the store re-opened. They eventually paid everyone back and became an internationally recognised health food store.
In 2017 Amazon bought Whole Foods Market for just over £10 billion!
Why did Whole Foods Market become such a success?
Because the customers, the team, the investors cared deeply about the purpose of this business and what it stood for.
Their purpose – “to nourish people and the planet”

What does your business stand for?

Blog 4 – Outperform your competition by leading your business with purpose…
In this time of change, disruption and uncertainty the expectations, on business have never been greater.
Businesses are expected to stand for more than just profits.
Enjoying a profitable business is not enough. It’s not enough for your team, for your customers or for your investors and, when other businesses are doing so much more, its’ not enough for your future growth and success either.
For businesses, large and small, success comes from creating a purpose-led environment that goes beyond profits and dividends. A purpose that creates value and a deeper meaning for everyone connected to your business.
So, what exactly does purpose mean?
The dictionary definition is:
“the reason why something is done: the aim or intention of something: the feeling of being determined to do or achieve something: the aim or goal of a person: what a person is trying to do, become”
In their book ‘It’s Not What You Sell, It’s What You Stand For’ Spence and Rushing state:
“Simply put. It’s a definitive statement about the difference you are trying to make. If you have a purpose and can articulate it with clarity and passion, everything else makes sense, everything flows”
But does having a sense of purpose really make a difference?
Jim Collins and Jerry Porras in their research for their book ‘Built to Last’ found that between 1926 and 1990 a group of visionary companies, guided by a purpose beyond making money, returned six times more to shareholders than their profit-first driven rivals.
Raj Sisodia identified companies loved by their employees, customers and other stakeholders – he called them ‘Firms of Endearment’.
These ‘Firms of Endearment’ have outperformed the S&P 500 share index by 14 times, clearly demonstrating the success and rewards that leading with purpose can bring.
And what do you think leading with a sense of purpose could mean to your business?

Blog 5 – Create success and engage all your stakeholders by leading with purpose
Have you ever thought about the difference your business makes to the world around it, the people within it, or the people connected to it?
You want your business to make a difference, and not just a profits-driven difference – real and sustainable success means much more than that…
Roy Spence, author of ‘It’s Not What You Sell, It’s What You Stand For’ believes that the purpose of every business is like a song:
“everybody within your business needs to know the words to the song. They listen to one another. They stand up when it is their turn, and they sing together when needed. And it must be a great song to sing”.
Many businesses think they have a purpose as they have a mission statement or a marketing tag line.
The purpose of your business is not your mission statement. The purpose of your business is different, you have to live it, embed it within your business, don’t let it become marketing BS!
Roy Spence believes: “Your Purpose is the difference you’re trying to make in the (your) world. Your Mission is the core strategy that when actioned will deliver your purpose”.
When you set out to make a difference by leading with purpose then you make your purpose real. Make your purpose explicit, clear and obvious. Make your purpose live and at the heart of everything that happens within your business.
It worked for Whole Foods Market – their purpose “to nourish people and the planet” saw them survive the worst of storms with the help of the people invested in their business and their purpose, and eventually went on to sell that business for £10 billion – not bad for a business that led with purpose, not profit!

Blog 6 – How much difference would leading with purpose make to your business
The purpose of your business is more important than the profits of your business…
Raj Sisodia (business researcher and author) identified purpose led companies loved by their employees, customers and other stakeholders – he called them ‘Firms of Endearment’.
These ‘Firms of Endearment’ outperformed the S&P 500 share index by 14 times, clearly demonstrating the success and rewards that leading with purpose can bring.
Wouldn’t you like to beat your past performance or your competition by similar ratios?
But what happens when you don’t lead with purpose?
In over 50 years of employee engagement research, Gallup has surveyed more that 82,000 teams, over 1.8 million employees, in 230 businesses across 49 industries and 73 countries.
According to this research only 15% of the employees described themselves as engaged in the work they were doing.
What a waste of human potential!
As Sisodia and John Mackey state in their book ‘Conscious Capitalism’
“The blame for this does not lie with the lazy and unmotivated workers but with the companies that fail to create purposeful workplaces in which people are given the opportunity to find meaning, purpose and happiness… by contributing to the valuable work of the company”
Gallup’s research findings support Sisodia and Mackey’s position that taking the time to work out what your business stands for and agreeing on a well-defined purpose is vital for team engagement.
What percentage of your team do you think are engaged in the work you do?
Imagine the difference to your business if you could improve the engagement levels of those in your teams who are currently not engaged in the work they do!
How much difference would this make to the future of your business?

Blog 7 – Bring a clear sense of purpose to your business and the results will follow
Running a successful business doesn’t have to just be about hitting production targets, supplying customers with your products and services, or making a profit.
It can also be about having a real, living and breathing sense of purpose, a deeper meaning that connects with all the people that come into contact with you or any member of your team.
A clear purpose is your business’s life blood, its reason for being, it should run through the culture of the business, it should be the key motivator for an engaged and enthusiastic team all working towards the same goal.
How can you go wrong if and when you build a deeper connection with your team and your customers because you lead with purpose?
And don’t be surprised if you feel more motivated and more passionate about your business when you capture your crystal-clear purpose.
Here is your ‘Make it happen’ checklist to get you started:
1) Stop seeing profits as the primary reason for your business’s existence
Yes, your business needs to make money, but that does not have to be why is exists,
Profits come as a consequence of a loyal and passionate team and loyal and passionate customers, who support ‘your purpose’ not your profits.
2) Work out what you and your business stand for and how your business can make a difference
Ask yourself and your team purpose driven questions, like ‘Why does our business need to exist?’ and ‘Why is what we do important to the people we serve?’
3) Make the purpose real in your business, so it does not become a marketing tagline
It’s easier to create a marketing tagline than it is to create a higher purpose that truly means something to everyone in your business. If it was easy everyone would do it, so don’t take the easy option.
4) Share it. Live it. Campaign it
Work out how to have your purpose show up every day or every week (at least) across your business. Don’t let your purpose be a plaque on the wall, it needs to be part of the fabric of your business, its very reason for existing and the reason you and your team come to work every day!
Click here to discover how to bring a clear sense of purpose to your business, and why you need to live this purpose, every day and every week and make it real.
