Blog 1 – Building a high-impact team starts with you…
Could you be making more of an impact on your team and their behaviours and more of an impact on your business success?
I suspect that you are so busy working in your business that you rarely have time to think about the impact you are making or to plan how to create a bigger impact.
Any changes you want to make in your business have to start with you. If you want your team to change, then you must change first – you have to lead by example. When you do this, your team will see the change as positive and are much more likely to follow you.
If you want your team to have a greater impact on your business, then YOU have to have a greater impact on your business first.
In simple terms, it's about adopting the thinking patterns and behaviours of proven impact players and building high-impact habits.
When you embrace these mindsets and practices, you can lead significant and positive change in yourself, your team and, ultimately, your business.

Blog 2 – Gain a competitive edge by ensuring your team contributes to your business success
Developing high-impact players in your team is crucial for the long-term success and growth of your business.
High-impact players are those who consistently contribute significantly to your business goals and objectives.
You would like to think that businesses such as Google, NASA and Adobe have worked out how to recruit, retain and develop high-impact people in their businesses.
They have.
They have worked out how to build behaviours that tackle their business challenges in a high-impact, self-driven, highly valuable way.
If they can do it, then so can you.
There are generally 3 types of players in most businesses:
High-Impact Players – Those who are doing work of exceptional value and impact. These people make a significant contribution to your business with their high-impact way of working and achieve their full potential (the exceptions).
Typical Contributors – These people are doing solid, if not great, work. They make a worthwhile contribution to your business but play below par, never quite living up to the expectations you had when you recruited them. They do a good job, but you feel they could be more valuable to your business, even though you never seem to be able to work out what to do to address this (the majority).
Under-Contributors – These are the team members who are working below their capability level. They consistently underperform in their roles, and they cause most of your stress, doubt and uncertainty.
You almost certainly know which members of your team belongs to which category.
When you understand the subtle difference between the first and second types, you can create a road map towards high-impact ways of working for yourself and for a large section of your team.
How do you make your typical contributors (the majority of your team) into high-impact players and how do you make your under-contributors start to add value to your business?
Click here to discover how to clarify the behaviours you are looking for, so that you can encourage and nurture the mindset and behaviours of high-impact players in your team and build greater success for your business.
Blog 3 – How your team respond to common business challenges determines your success…
In interviews, managers of large businesses such as LinkedIn and Google have stated that their high-impact players deliver work that is 3 times more valuable to the business than that of typical contributors and 10 times more valuable than that of under-contributors.
Imagine if this could be the case in your business!
In her book Impact Players, Liz Wiseman's research helped identify the 5 mindset practices and behaviours of high-impact players.
It's important to reiterate that this starts with you – you need to start thinking and behaving like a high-impact player and build your own high-impact habits. Only then will you earn the credibility of your team and enable them to do the same.
By working on the 5 practices of high-impact players yourself, you set the standard for high-impact behaviours across your business.
Liz Wiseman’s 5 common business challenges are constant realities in business. These are challenges that everyone involved in your business will deal with or have dealt with at some point.
But how do your impact players respond to these challenges?
This is what separates them from the typical contributors and under-contributors, and it's what makes them essential to your team and business success.
Their response to these challenges is why you MUST invest time in building the habits and behaviours within your team so that all can adopt a high-impact way of working.
Here are Wiseman's everyday business challenges:
- A messy problem
- Unclear roles
- Unforeseen challenges
- Moving goals
- Unrelenting workload
The way your team respond to each of these challenges will tell you whether they are a high-impact player, a typical contributor or an under-contributor.

Blog 4 – Ask your team the right questions and discover the impact they can have on your business
When it comes to understanding the importance of high-impact players in your business, there are a lot of numbers to consider.
There are 3 types of players in your business:
- High-Impact Players
- Typical Contributors
- Under-Contributors
There are 5 business challenges to help you identify which type of players you have in your business:
- A messy problem
- Unclear roles
- Unforeseen challenges
- Moving goals
- Unrelenting workload
There are 5 questions and 5 behaviour responses to these challenges that will help you identify the high-impact players in your business:
Here are the 5 questions:
- Do you see a messy problem as a distraction from doing the job or as a chance to be useful in completing the job that’s really needed?
- If roles and responsibilities are unclear, do you wait for direction or do you see an opportunity to lead?
- When unforeseen challenges show up, do you see more hassle or do you see a chance to finish the job in a better way?
- If the goal feels like a moving target, do you stick to what you know best or do you see a reason to build new capabilities, behaviours and habits?
- When the work seems unrelenting, do you ask for help or do you see a need to work better together and help lighten the load for everyone in some way?
Below is a useful diagram which outlines the difference between what typical contributors and high-impact players in your team would do when faced with the questions relating to the business challenges listed above.
You have Liz Wiseman and her book Impact Players to thank for all the numbers and for the diagram above. But she does clarify the difference between the behaviours of typical contributors and high-impact players.
Take the time to sit down with your team, ask them the 5 questions and see how they respond.
“The Impact Player behaviours are not about working harder, it’s not about working more – it’s about working more courageously.”
– Liz Wiseman, Impact Players

Blog 5 – 5 behaviours to help your team build high-impact ways of working…
When you look around your team, you can identify those who make the biggest impact on your business, those who show up, do a good job but who never really excel and those who, despite their talent, regularly underperform.
How do you change this?
I am sure you have spent time thinking about this.
How do you generate the right momentum in your business so your team are contributing more and having a greater impact?
To understand what a difference high-impact players can make to your business, here are the 5 behaviours (from Liz Wiseman’s book, Impact Players) that set impact players apart from typical contributors.
1. Do the Job That’s Needed – Impact players, when confronted with a messy problem, will step out of their comfort zone to tackle the real issue. They see ‘not knowing something’ as an opportunity to learn. They seem to know what needs to be done without being asked to do it.
2. Step Up, Step Back – When something needs to be done and it's unclear who is to take charge, impact players practice leadership on demand, but never overstep the mark.
3. Finish Stronger – Impact players are completer-finishers. They are persistent, low maintenance and take ownership of the problem until it's done.
4. Ask and Adjust – Impact players are always adapting and adjusting and are never really finished. They view change as an opportunity to learn. They ask questions and don’t mind being corrected.
5. Make Work Light – When your team is overloaded with work and deadlines are looming, impact players are quick to step in and lend a hand. They tend to bring calm to a stressful situation.
“Real Impact Players channel their intellect, talent, and passion toward what is of the greatest value to the organization, the stakeholder, and the shareholder – those the organization serves. It can be a long way from a supposed Impact Player to a real Impact Player.”
– Liz Wiseman, Impact Players
When faced with business challenges, how do you and your team respond? Do you rise to the challenge, see difficulties as learning opportunities, step in and help and constantly re-adjust to evolving and changing environments around you?
Or do you get frustrated, preferring the status quo, fearing change, allowing the stress to dominate?
How you and your team behave in challenging business situations determines the impact on your business.
When you adopt the behaviours and habits of high-impact players in successful businesses such as NASA and Google, you will have a high impact on the way your business is run and on its future success.

Blog 6 – Build the right skills in your business to foster high-impact behaviours and habits
You already know that improving the performance of your team and your business is reliant on you – you are responsible for the success of both.
Sometimes this can be a pleasure, especially when your team are excelling and your business is doing well. It can also be a burden in times of uncertainty, economic pressure, low team morale and performance and struggling sales.
I am sure you have experienced both sets of circumstances.
You want to be able to count on your team to have your back, to step up, adjust to the changes and lead if needed.
They can only create this sort of impact if they see you demonstrating the right behaviours yourself. When you adopt the thinking patterns and behaviours of proven impact players and start to build high-impact habits, this will encourage your team towards high-impact ways of working.
According to Liz Wiseman's book Impact Players, to do this you need to focus on 2 core competencies. Wiseman calls these 2 competencies master skills.
These skills create a momentum shift of improvement and results in your business, as the behaviours and habits of your high-impact players cascade down and affect the behaviour of the rest of the team.
Whom do you serve? – Wiseman suggests that, when faced with a difficult or unusual situation, most action-orientated professionals would want to take charge and act swiftly and, because of this, sometimes the target is missed.
There can be a tendency to see the issue from just one point of view.
There is a great story in the Business Breakthrough report about a submarine commander, David Marquet, who turned one of the worst-performing subs in the US Navy into the best in just a few months due to his leadership, high-impact influence and determination for all of his team to change their way of thinking and begin to make meaningful contributions.
When you change your perspective, you see the real needs and priorities through the eyes of the people or communities that are served by your work.
How many times has this happened in your business?
How often do you look at a situation from multiple perspectives?
How full is your glass? – The expression ‘glass half-full’ is a well-used one, but Wiseman's research shows that to make a meaningful impact you and your team must see the challenges in your business through an ‘opportunity’ lens.
High-impact players will typically see threats as opportunities, challenges as chances to learn and failures as moments to improve.
How full is your glass? Are you overcome by challenges or do you rise to them?
Do you sit and hold your head in your hands when things go wrong or do you rub your hands together, excited by the opportunity to learn and improve?
You will see the difference in your business when you and your team adopt an opportunity mindset.
Click here to read more about these 2 core competencies in the business breakthrough report and to discover more about the 4 skills and habits which can help you reframe threats to your business as opportunities.
Blog 7 – Build the right skills and behaviours in your business to ensure you and your team are high-impact players
When you look around your team, you can identify those team members who are delivering their absolute maximum for your business, but they are the exception.
The majority of your team may be doing a good job, but you know that they could do better.
So how do you empower them to do more? How do you leverage this potential and how do you lead by example and show your top performers how it's done so that they and the rest of your team follow suit?
How do you ensure that the majority of your team are high-impact players?
If you have never heard of ‘high-impact players’ or you are only vaguely familiar with the concept, do not worry.
With a little thinking and planning, you can transform your own habits and behaviours so that you are having a more valuable impact on your business. You can then nurture these same behaviours in your team.
Read the business breakthrough report and the supporting tools – they are packed full of ‘practical how-tos’ to get your team on board with adopting high-impact ways of working.
Here are 4 helping hands to get you started:
1. Work on yourself first. If you want your team to build their high-impact habits and behaviours, you have to have done the same. Start seeing threats as opportunities and look at your business challenges from a number of different perspectives. Listen more to your customers and to the people around you and be more curious – then you can speak from experience, with confidence. When your team see that you are exhibiting high-impact behaviour they are likely to follow suit.
2. Acknowledge the people who have the potential for greater impact. Use the 2 master skills (core competencies), 5 business challenges, 5 questions and 5 impact behaviours to build a framework that you and your team can work with. You know your team, so you will be able to identify who you’ll focus on first, helping you to create a cascade change in the behaviour of the rest of the team. It only takes a few to get started.
3. Share your experiences of the 2 core competencies. Share the good and bad experiences around viewing threats as opportunities and around considering all the perspectives. Discuss these experiences with your team and ask them to share their experiences as well. This will enhance learning and will encourage other members of the team to embrace the high-impact mindset.
4. Investigate and explore the 5 behaviours. Click on the tools at the bottom of the report to read more about the behaviours of high-impact players, and get yourself a copy of Liz Wisemans book Impact Players.
