Blog 2 – Discover the importance of the Scrum framework when it comes to being agile in your business
I am sure you have heard of the phrase ‘continuous improvement’. Toyota pioneered this method of working, which has since become a global benchmark for effective business management systems.
The agile management system has influenced almost every successful manufacturer across the globe.
It also influenced the ‘Scrum’ framework.
The Scrum framework was created by Dr Jeff Sutherland in 1995 and is based on the way a rugby scrum works – a small, focused, highly connected and coordinated team working to achieve a quick, clear result every time they get together.
In his book Scrum: The Art of Doing Twice the Work in Half the Time, Jeff Sutherland details the 4 principles of Scrum:
- People and interactions over processes and tools
- Working products over excessive documentation
- Customer collaboration over negotiation
- Responding to change over following a rigid plan
For the technology industry, Scrum has become the default framework for creating new software, and it is now spreading into all areas of business – why?
Because it works so well and works so fast!
“At its root, Scrum is based on a simple idea, whenever you start a project, why not regularly check in, see if what you're doing is heading in the right direction and if it's actually what the people want? And question whether there are ways to improve how you are doing, what you are doing, any ways of doing it better and faster, and what might be keeping you from doing that.” – Dr Jeff Sutherland

Blog 3 – Sprint your way to an agile business
Being agile in your business does not just mean reacting to every opportunity or challenge that comes your way. Without a framework, plan or structure, this can lead to chaos and confusion within your team and creates a demotivated and unengaged workforce who have no idea what to expect next.
However, staying the same and following rigid plans, regardless of what crops up along the way, will also yield the same result.
So how do you react in an agile way, whilst still having a plan?
You follow the Scrum framework. The Scrum framework is an agile methodology that helps teams work collaboratively to deliver complex projects in short, iterative cycles called Sprints, allowing for continuous improvement and adaptability.
A key insight is that Scrum is something you learn by doing, and it has proven to work better in 3 distinct stages – Shu Ha Ri.
Shu Ha Ri is a concept that describes the stages of learning and mastery.
- Shu: Follow the rules and practices closely, focusing on learning the fundamentals.
- Ha: Once you understand the principles behind the practices you can begin to adapt and modify them.
- Ri: Now you have mastered the principles and can innovate, creating new approaches beyond the original framework.
There is much more detail about the Scrum framework in the Business Breakthrough report and associated tools and resources, but here are the key steps (following the 3 distinct stages of Shu Ha Ri:
- Pick a Product Owner – the person with the vision of what you are going to do
- Pick a Scrum Team – (3-9 people) with cross-functional skills
- Pick a Scrum Master – a coach to help prevent delays
- Create a Product Backlog – a prioritised list of tasks or features
- Estimate – the team estimate the effort needed to achieve each priority
- Use a Scrum Board – this clearly shows the product backlog as ‘Do/Doing/Done’
- Sprint Planning – the team selects items from the backlog to complete in a Sprint.
- Sprint – time-boxed period (usually 2-4 weeks) where the team works on the selected tasks
- Daily Standup – brief daily meeting to assess progress and address roadblocks
- Sprint Review – a meeting to demonstrate completed work and gather feedback
- Sprint Retrospective – a session to reflect on the Sprint and identify improvements for the next one.
Then the next Sprint will start.
