So, what’s stopping you?
Most of us don’t have or have not been taught the requisite skills to ask the right questions; but be in no doubt, your business growth and future success depends on you getting this right.
Rudyard Kipling wrote a poem called ‘The Elephant’s Child’ in 1880 that in our competitive world is more relevant than it has ever been.
I keep six honest serving men
(They taught me all I knew);
Their names are What and Why and When
And How and Where and Who.
All the best questions start with these 6 honest serving men, the key to your business success comes from asking the right questions and using these 6 words…
Here is a brief explanation of the words and their importance:
What? - This can be used to seek things out that are or will be… or used in a sequence to solve a problem.
· What do you want the product to do?
· What can we do to help you grow your business?
Why? – Seeks cause and effect – helps you to gain a deeper understanding of a business situation.
· Why have you not purchased from us in the past?
· Why are you looking for alternatives to your current supplier?
When? – Normally a simple question to ask, normally seeking a timeframe.
· When do you want the product to be ready?
· When do you want us to deliver?
How? – Looks at the process – how did this happen or how will this happen.
· How many deliveries would you like?
· How do you want the product packaged?
Where? – Looks to locate an action or event – this can be a simple question or part of a more detailed question
· Where do you want to the product delivered?
· Where will you store the item once it has arrived?
Who? – This question brings people into the question – connecting them with an action or an object
· Who will take delivery of the goods?
· Who do I need to contact to get payment?
· Who will send me future orders?
Used correctly the six honest serving men will be at the core of the questions you ask within your business.

BLOG 5 – Start with a yes-tag question and change the outcome of conversations with your customers…
Asking the right questions transforms the conversations you have with your customers.
Asking the right questions builds better relationships with your customers.
Asking the right questions turns prospects into customers.
Start with a ‘yes-tag’ question, but, what are ‘yes-tag’ questions?
Simply, they are questions where to only real logical answer is ‘yes’…
The point of asking a ‘yes-tag’ question is to start the conversation on the right foot.
Here are some examples:
· You want your business to be successful?
· You want to deliver the highest level of customer service?
· You want all deliveries to arrive on time?
· Wouldn’t it be great if more of your competitor’s buyers bought from you instead?
The easy and immediate answer to all these questions is yes. In fact, you could tag yes onto the end of the question and it would still be a question…
· Wouldn’t it be great if more of your competitor’s buyers bought from you instead - Yes?
A yes-tag question is a great way to start any conversation – especially if it’s with a future customer. It creates the right atmosphere of wanting to help them and will ultimately put them in a positive frame of mind about working with you.
Yes-tag questions enable you to magically open a conversation positively.

BLOG 6 – Gain a competitive edge using well-crafted questions…
To get the answers you want from any discussion it is important to know that there are two fundamental types of question.
The open and the closed question.
Asking open questions will give you the information you need:
For example:
How many would you like?
What colour would you like them in?
How important is the quantity and the colour?
The more open questions you ask, the more you will learn and the more you can tailor your offer to be exactly in line with your customer needs.
How do open questions influence your business discussions?
Open questions prove to the customer that you are genuinely interested in them, their business and working with them, influencing them to choose you and your offer.
It does pay however to ask the right open questions – beware of using the ‘why’ question to early.
If used to early the meeting can come across more like an interrogation and will put a lot of buyers off, try using ‘how’ instead of ‘why’. ‘How’ seems less aggressive.
“Why are you using them and not us?” can become “How did you come to use that supplier?”
Remember using open questions and gathering information is about building rapport and trust.
‘Why’ questions can be asked further into the discussion.
A closed question will normally result in a yes or no answer:
Would you like 50 of them?
And here is a stronger closed question: Would you like 50, 100 or 150 of them?
This question gives the buyer choices, but you still win, as they are still buying from you.
How many times do you use closed questions in your business discussions? And do they give your buyers choices?
Do you prepare a list of open and closed questions to ask in each meeting?
Do you have a fall-back position if things don’t go to plan, or have you lost business because you have been too pushy with the questions you ask?
Click here (URL to your webpage BBS) to learn that your business wins when you prepare the right questions to ask and have a ‘get out of jail free’ phrase.
BLOG 7 – Make well-crafted questions work for you and your business and have more buyers say yes…
Well-crafted questions will massively improve your conversations with your customers and prospects.
But how well do you prepare for your business discussions?
If you already know the outcome you want to achieve from a meeting, it pays to prepare well the questions you need to ask to achieve that outcome.
But do you prepare your questions? Do you write them down beforehand?
Using the right questions, at the right time, will help you get the result you want from the discussion.
Here are 5 steps to help you prepare the right questions and deliver them successfully in your next business meetings.
1) Generate 20 open questions
Make this easier by using these open questions – What – Where – When – How – Who and Why.
Write 20 questions down that start with one of these words. Remember you don’t have to stop at 20 – if you have more – keep going – the more you prepare the better!
2) Work out some carefully worded yes-tag questions
You want to start your conversation with your buyer on a positive note and put them in the right frame of mind. These questions show them that you are positive too and create a great atmosphere to start the meeting.
3) Give your buyer choices
Give you buyer a number of alternatives at the end of the conversation. Create choices by using closed questions allowing your buyer to choose. For example: Do you want us to deliver to your office or factory site? – Would you like the first delivery this week or next?
Everyone likes to be offered alternatives to choose from – it gives your buyer a sense of control – but you still win…
4) Practice using your ‘get out of jail free’ phrase
When the conversation does not go to plan or has reached a bit of a stalemate, fall back on the phrase ‘Tell me’ – use this as a trigger to a strong open question. It is less confrontational than ‘why’ and is a simple but powerful questioning skill.
5) One of the oldest questions around
The conversation can become out of control from your point of view if the buyer starts asking all the questions!
To regain control, practice answering a question with a question.
For example:
Question: “How quickly can you get it delivered to my office?”
Your answer: “Tell me, how quickly do you need it delivered?”
